I’m currently a guild leader. If I need your book does that mean I’m a failure?

It takes more courage to be open to the prospect of learning something new than it does to sit and continue on your current course. Being a guild leader is a position that requires constant education. There are many ways to manage people, many ways to handle the day to day activities of the guild, and many ways to judge success. No, reading this book is not an admission of failure. It is an affirmation that you’re open to new possibilities and perspectives. It means you’re looking to take what you already do well and strengthen your skills.

Can The Guild Leader’s Companion work for other organizations besides guilds?

Yes, it absolutely can. Ferrel used the term “guild” in this book because that is what his experience centered around. Guild could have just as easily been Linkshell, Kinship, or clan. The book has a focus on managing people, organizations, and positivity. It has even been recommended that a re-branded version be used for training supervisors in corporations.

I haven’t seriously thought about leading a guild and may never. Is there anything in The Guild Leader’s Companion for me?

Yes, actually there is. Reading the book will give you an entirely different perspective on what it actually takes to run a successful organization. You’ll learn what your leaders go through to make sure everyone walks in the right direction. You might even gain a new appreciation for their work! You’ll also be introduced to new ways of cooperating with your fellow members and that will strengthen you as a player.

What qualifies Ferrel to teach others how to lead a guild?

The shortest answer to this has to be “A track record of success.” That and a willingness to write a book is why Ferrel felt qualified to instruct others. Ferrel has been a guild-focused player since the text-based MUD days and has repeatedly been utilized in positions of leadership since then. In different games, different guilds, and different play styles he has been successful. Even after ending a multi-year “server-first guild leader” career, Ferrel still came back after a rest and runs a “current tier” raid guild.
